Question

The Member for Konoin (Hon. Brighton Yegon, MP) to ask the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry: - Could the Cabinet Secretary – (i) Explain the circumstances that led to the Ministry’s decision to allow the importation of fully finished foreign-produced edible oils into the country despite there being local manufacturers for the product? (ii) Provide details of the specific actions being taken, including policy interventions, to provide a conducive environment for local producers and to protect them from competition? (iii) Elaborate on the measures that the Ministry is taking to ensure that the country’s scarce foreign exchange reserves are not depleted as a result of these imports, and the plans for compensating the equivalent revenue of over 40 billion shillings generated in form of tax from the importation of duty-free edible oil?
